Tucson Greyhound Park

Tucson Greyhound Park offered year-round pari-mutuel wagering on live greyhound racing. The track opened in 1944 and, during more than 50 years of continuous racing, played host to six of the 25 all-time leading greyhound race winners in history.

JR's Ripper ranked as the number one all-time leading race winner with 143 career victories. He retired from racing at Tucson Greyhound Park in 1986 and was inducted into the Greyhound Hall of Fame in 1992.

The five other top race winners who competed at the park were:

  • 4th All-Time Leader Sarah Cap - 120 wins
  • 10th All-Time Leader Frontier TJ DJ - 109 wins
  • 12th All-Time Leader Lurcher Boy - 107 wins
  • 21st All-Time Leader K.A. Clover - 98 wins
  • 25th All-Time Leader Cut Off - 95 wins

Located along 4th Avenue and 36th Street in Tucson, Arizona (mailing address: 2601 S. 3rd Avenue, Tucson, AZ), the facility had a track capacity of 3,000 spectators, a clubhouse capacity of 500, and parking accommodations for approximately 1,000 vehicles.

Tucson Greyhound Park ultimately ceased live racing operations in 2016 after voters approved Arizona Proposition 206, which raised the state's minimum wage and significantly increased operating costs for the racing industry.

Facing mounting financial pressure and declining attendance, park ownership determined that continuing live greyhound racing was no longer sustainable. The final live race was held in June 2016, marking the end of more than seven decades of greyhound competition at the historic Tucson venue.
